Vineyards that tell our story

The secret of our wines lies in the native Tinta de Toro grapes, a variety that has stood the test of time, unaffected by phylloxera, and grown in vineyards with centuries of history. These vineyards, at an altitude of 800 metres, are located on soils poor in organic matter and benefit from an extreme climate, resulting in wines of great body, complexity and character.

Planting System

Our vineyards are cultivated traditionally, in bush vines with low planting densities and without irrigation, which is why the yield is very low, and our wines are the result of the essence of the vineyard that withstands extreme drought conditions.

This is also why the ‘vintage’ factor is important in our wines. Part of the charm is appreciating the variations imposed by an unadulterated climate in each vintage.

Located between the Duero and Hornija rivers, the vineyards are planted on soils with a high gravel content on the surface, brown limestone deeper down and low in organic matter.

Our vineyards are surrounded by nature, bordering the Riberas de Castronuño nature reserve, the Requejal wetland and the Cubillas oak forest, the largest and oldest in Castile and León.

The extremely continental climate, low rainfall (400 mm) and altitude (800 m) influence the quality of the Tinta de Toro grape, which is perfectly adapted after more than 600 years in the area.

The Elías Mora Winery has a serious commitment to the region, which includes the promotion of wine tourism. It offers visitors who wish to visit San Román de Hornija a range of options so that they can see the facilities and taste the wine.
